Treating anal glands in dogs

The anal glands in dogs and cats, also known as anal sacs, are located between the internal and external sphincter of the anus and exit through two ducts next to the anus. These anal glands in dogs contain a liquid with a specific smell, which dogs use to mark out their territory. In addition to marking off the territory between dogs, the liquid also has the function of being able to find the environment from a great distance. In our pets, this function is largely lost.

What is anal glands in dogs
The anal glands in dogs empty themselves normally during defecation. In addition, they can also empty themselves in "panic" circumstances, for example, in the consulting room of the veterinarian. It can regularly happen that the anal glands of a dog do not empty properly.

Causes of anal gland problems in dogs

Problems with the anal glands can have several causes, such as:

  • Change of diet
  • Chronic problems with the intestines
  • Worm infection.

How to recognise anal gland problems in dogs
If the contents of a dog's anal glands do not empty properly, a dark brown/greyish brown puddle often forms. This irritation causes the dog or cat to lick and bite under the base of the tail, belly, flank and/or rub the ground with its hindquarters ("sledding"). The area around the anus can also become painful and sensitive for the dog. If the anal gland inflammation is broken, an open wound will appear under the anus.

Natural supplements for anal glands in dogs
In most cases, it is sufficient to empty the glands. For support, you can use natural supplements in combination with high-fibre food if the dog also has problems with thin stools.
