Prostate diseases in dogs

The prostate is a gland located around the urethra in dogs (male), just behind the bladder neck. It consists of 2 lobes, and its size depends on whether the dog has been neutered or not, and on its age. The dog's prostate continually produces a secretion, which ends up in the urethra. The ejaculate consists of 97 % prostatic fluid, only the rest is semen. The production of the secretion depends on sex hormones. In puppies, the prostate is still underdeveloped. Only during puberty does the prostate grow under the influence of sex hormones. The fluid has a nourishing, transporting and anti-bacterial function for the sperm, among other things.
